Here's a list of terms that one might run into while learning about Chiari.

Brain Herniation...

...also referred to as acquired intracranial herniation, refers to shift of brain tissue from its normal location, into an adjacent space as a result of mass effect. 6

Cerebellar Tonsillar Ectopia...

...indicates an inferior position of the cerebellar tonsils. 4

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)...

...the fluid that flows in and around the hollow spaces of the brain and spinal cord, and between two of the meninges (the thin layers of tissue that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord). 10

Chiari Malfromation...

...is a problem in which a part of the brain (the cerebellum) at the back of the skull bulges through a normal opening in the skull where it joins the spinal canal. 5

Cine MRI ... (magnetic resonance imaging)

...is a special MRI study used to observe cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. 2

Hydrocephalus ...

...is an excessive buildup of CSF in the brain. 9

Insomnia...

...is a common sleep disorder that can make it hard to fall asleep, hard to stay asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and not be able to get back to sleep. 11

McRae Line...

...is a radiographic line drawn on a lateral skull radiograph or on a midsagittal section of CT or MRI that connects the anterior and posterior margins of the foramen magnum (basion to opisthion). 1

MRI... (magnetic resonance imaging)

...a procedure in which radio waves and a powerful magnet linked to a computer are used to create detailed pictures of areas inside the body. 3

Scoliosis...

...is a sideways curvature of the spine that most often is diagnosed in adolescents. 8

Spina Bifida...

...is the incomplete closing of the backbone and membranes around the spinal cord. 14

Syringobulbia...

... is a disorder in which a CSF-filled tubular cyst called a syrinx, forms within the spinal cord’s central canal. 12

Syringolmyelia (syrinx)...

... is a disorder in which a CSF-filled tubular cyst called a syrinx, forms within the spinal cord’s central canal. 15

Tethered Cord...

...is a neurological disorder caused by tissue attachments that limit the movement of the spinal cord within the spinal column. 13

Tinnitus...

...is when you experience ringing or other noises in one or both of your ears. 7
